Savory High Protein Yogurt with Chickpeas or Dahi Chaat

Today I am here with the recipe of  Savory Yogurt, a recipe that I’m sure will delight a lot of my readers 🙂 We are all familiar with the sweet yogurts and yogurt-granola-fruit combinations available in every grocery store. But I absolutely love the savory yogurt bowl since it makes for the perfect satisfying, refreshing snack and is totally customizable according to your taste. The inspiration behind this recipe is, of course, the ubiquitous Chaat from India. So next time you’re in the mood for some yogurt, try going savory!

Chaat is one of the most popular street foods of Northern parts of India. There are so many varieties of Chaat! Depending upon which state or city you are in, they will have their own “specialties”. But you would be hard pressed to find a person in India who doesn’t like some variety of Chaat. One of the most popular and world renowned variety is the Dahi Paapdi Chaat. It is usually made with plain yogurt, chickpeas, boiled diced potatoes and some optional crispy paapdi’s (fried tortilla pieces) with seasonings and chutneys to top.

In today’s recipe, I have added chickpeas and boiled diced potatoes for protein and fiber; paapdi for the crunch factor, a drizzle of sweet chutney for depth; and a sprinkling of chaat masala (Indian spice) for extra tang and flavor. This savory yogurt bowl is ideal since it requires minimal prep, and you can have it for breakfast, lunch, snack or dinner.

Ingredients:

  • Organic Plain Non fat Yogurt or Plain Non fat Greek Yogurt – 5.3 oz.

  • Drained and rinsed cooked chickpeas – 1/3 cup
  • Boiled potato – ½ (diced)
  • (Optional) Paapdi – 4 or 5 pieces

  • Ground roasted cumin seeds – ¼ tsp or according to taste
  • Regular Salt or Pink salt – ½ t or according to taste
  • Ground black pepper – 1/8 t or according to taste
  • (Optional) Red chili powder – 1/8 t or according to taste
  • (Optional) Sweet chutney – 1 tsp or according to taste.
  • (Optional) Chaat masala – ¼ tsp or according to taste, to sprinkle at end

Directions:

  • Take the yogurt in a bowl, and lightly whisk it. If using Greek yogurt, add a tad bit of water to thin it out and then whisk.
  • Then add the seasonings (except chaat masala) and chutneys to it.
  • Stir it well and taste.
  • Then add the chickpeas, diced potato and if you like the paapdi.
  • Slightly mix it. Sprinkle some chaat masala on top and Enjoy!

Substitutions and Suggestions:

  • Make sure whatever kind of yogurt you use (dairy or non-dairy or Greek), it is only Plain flavor and not Vanilla or any other fruit flavored. Greek yogurt will be more filling due to it’s high protein content.
  • Pomegranate seeds (if you have on hand) work as a great garnish also!
  • A great alternate for the Sweet Chutney is Apple Butter to bring a hint of sweetness.
  • Normally a paapdi is usually made by deep frying tiny (1”-1.5” round) seasoned flour tortillas. You can either buy them from an Indian grocery store or just take regular tortillas, cut them in to small 1”-1.5” pieces and deep fry them. For a healthier version you can bake the slightly greased tortillas pieces. You can do it in one shot and store the leftovers.
  • If you don’t have Paapdi, in a pinch you can substitute crispy pita chips!
